Craft has long been a means of expressing emotions that are difficult to convey through words alone. Death and grief are often treated as taboo topics and are shrouded or minimized — leaving those experiencing those things without a community or tools to navigate their loss. Crafting in community can be a way to bridge that societal gap and foster connection.

MFS Instructor Michael Marie is a fiber and funerary artisan who intricately weaves the worlds of craft and grief together through her work and believes in the power of community. Though named a Weave and Grieve, you may bring just about any craft project to work on — just make sure to be respectful of the space. Crafts where you can easily “find your flow” are ideal for processing grief. Don’t have a project going? Don’t fret! We will have a basket frame available to borrow and weave upcycled fiber into, no experience required.

All grief is welcome at the Weave and Grieve — whether you’re mourning the loss of a loved one, a job, a too rapidly changing world, or any manner of other things. The new moon is a time of darkness, stillness, and renewal. It’s a liminal space between an end and a beginning, which lends perfectly to processing and embracing grief in all its forms.

If this sounds appealing to you, register here and join us on February 17th from 6pm-8pm.
